QUEENS PARK RANGERS From the 1970's.
1972/73 finished second in division two and were promoted back into division one. A few high spots came, 1973/74 reached the sixth round of the cup again only to lose against Leicester City but record crowds were back. Another record crowd against Leeds followed. 1975/76 QPR were runners up behind Liverpool . In their first attempt the following season made the quarter finals of the UEFA Cup. The club soon slipped back into decline and again back into the second division under the watchfull eye of manager Steve Burtenshaw. 1979 saw the arrival of Tommy Docherty but soon replaced by Terry Venables. 1981/82 QPR became the first league club to install an artificial playing surface. It was in 1982 that an FA Cup final was reached by QPR losing 1 – 0 in a replay with Tottenham. The following season saw a rise yet again in the club, they won the second division championship and returned back into the first division. Under Venables QPR finished a nice fifth in the first division and a UEFA Cup qualification, Venables then left the club. With a number of managers, more ups and downs in the clubs games over the next few years, mostly finishing mid table but avoiding the dreaded relegation. 1986 QPR were runners up in the League Cup.
QPR once again finished fifth in the table in the 1987/88 season but missing out on a UEFA Cup campaign due to English football being banned from European competition. The same season the so called ‘Plastic Grass’ was replaced back to turf. In 1989 and after a couple more management changes the club reached the quarter finals in the FA Cup losing to Liverpool .
Early in the nineties saw some good results and most notable one being 1992 against Manchester United and winning 4 – 1 at Old Trafford and thus ensuring Queens Park Rangers a secure place in the newly formed Premier League in which they finished fifth in the first season of 1992/93. after a somewhat few good seasons, QPR began to struggle to stay up in the League and at the end of 1996 lost the battle to stay in it, sadly they were relegated to Division one.
The club was duly sold and bought the same year, a reshuffle of managers and players took place but to no avail, at the end of 1996/97 QPR were five points outside the playoffs. The following season 1997/98 the club narrowly missed being relegated yet again, it was the same in season 1998/99. 1999/2000 saw QPR climb up the table under the guidance of Gerry Francis. The following season the club looked for promotion, this was short lived and the club were again relegated. After another stint in division two, the club were once again promoted to division one in 2003/04.
After some financial pressures and various scandals it was announced that Renault Formula 1 team boss Flavio Briatore and Bernie Ecclestone would be buying the club. QPR competed the 2007/08 season in the Football League Championship. With more investment in 2008 the club have a four year plan and looking for promotion back into the Premier League within this time.
Only time will tell.
