DRAMATIC TURNAROUND

With a dramatic turnaround, the club were on the up and by the beginning of the 1993/94 season the club were into the premiership and playing like the label they were given, ‘the entertainers’. Under Keegan the club did some buying and selling of players and developed some future key players like David Ginola and Les Ferdinand and later a record signing fee of £15 million for Alan Shearer. After Keegan had put his mark on the club along came some short term management from Kenny Dalglish and Ruud Gullit and then it was the turn of former England manager Bobby Robson. After some good victories and great performances with Robson in charge he was sacked in 2004 for failing to qualify for the champion’s league much to the dismay of the supporters. His replacement was an unpopular choice, Graeme Souness and he was also sacked shortly after in 2006 and replaced by Glenn Roeder. Shearer retired at the end of 2005/06. In 2007 Sam Allardyce replaced Roeder despite the club doing well with Roeder at the helm. With what was less than a year as manager, Allardyce left Newcastle United in 2008 and Kevin Keegan returned once again to the club as manager which was just over eleven years after he left. With some more executive appointments in the likes of Dennis Wise, Tony Jimenez and Jeff Vetere along with a few more executive partners the future was looking good again for Newcastle United. However this was soon to change, as the transfer window closed in the summer of 2008/09 season, speculation was circulating that things were not at ease with Keegan and the board and on September 4 with less than a year at the club, Keegan resigned as manager because he stated he was not in control of who was bought by the club.

Newcastle Home.
