From 1926 through to 1931 the club were under various managers, John Chapman – later suspended by the FA. Clarence Hilditch and Herbert Bamlett. Under these managers the club had rocky seasons, both up and down the leagues and in and out of first and second division. By the end of season 1930/31 Herbert Bamlett bowed out after the club were relegated again into the second division. Walter Crickmer took over, under him the club started to run into financial difficulty, by the year end the situation was so dire that player’s wages were not paid and bankruptcy was a big threat.
James Gibson came to the clubs rescue and invested 30,000 and got the club back on track. Scott Duncan was given the managers job along with the money. However things were getting no better and in 1933/34 Man U were on the brink of the Third division. It was the last day of the season they were saved by beating Millwall who were relegated instead. However their rivals Manchester City had won the FA Cup with a player called Matt Busby! Things started to look up in the 1934/35 by finishing in fifth place, the following season, silverware was seen by securing the second division championship. With a varying amount of yo-yoing going from one league to another, they were eventually in the first division finishing 14th in the 1938/39 season. The outbreak of war then put a hold on football again.
