Sadly Slipping.
Sadly in 1961 with such a good team, Newcastle slipped back down into the second division under the management of Charlie Mitten, for the club this was devastating to say the least. An old team captain from the post war years returned to revitalise the club, his name was Joe Harvey. He set about with Stan Seymour to rebuild, conquer and make the way clear to get back where they belonged. In 1965 this was achieved and they won the second division championship. Under Joe Harvey, the team qualified for Europe in 1968 for the first time. They won the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, which was the forerunner to the UEFA Cup, the following year. In the following years Joe Harvey brought some new names to the club like Tony Green, Terry Hibbitt, and a talented centre forward Malcolm MacDonald who was nicknamed ‘supermac’ and a renowned player, he was a great force into getting Newcastle into the 1974 FA Cup and 1976 League Cup in which on both occasions they were runners up. As a consolation in 1974 and 1975 Newcastle won the Texaco Cup.

As Newcastle United started the 1980s they were in a severe decline and once again in the second division. Harvey had been replaced by Gordon Lee and he soon gave way to Richard Dinnis and then Bill McGarry all within 5 years. Then came Arthur Cox who was the one to lead Newcastle back into the first division, and along came a new name in the club, Kevin Keegan who joined the club in 1982. Further managers were Jack Charlton, Willie McFaul and Jim Smith for the rest of the 80s decade. Under these well respected managers Newcastle remained on top but it was toward the end of Jim Smiths’ management Newcastle was relegated once more in 1989. Ex Spurs player Osvaldo Ardiles took over as manager in 1991 and then Kevin Keegan took over the lead in 1992. Whilst at the wrong end of division two, the team were playing to stay in that division and struggled to stay there, but fortunately did so with last minute goals in the final two league games.
