LEEDS UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB.

Leeds United were formed in 1919 after the demise of Leeds City football club. The demise of Leeds City was the result of a scandel in which illegal payments were made to guest players during the war years - world war 1. It was not until a disgruntled player called Charlie Copeland, who was not granted any payments, made the payments aware to the football authorities. This was however just the start of the downfall. Friction was also getting worse between two club officials called Joseph Connor and George Cripps, the longer the two were together the worse the situation got, and eventually Cripps was accused of mishandling the clubs finances. When Cripps found out this accusation he also went to the Football League and the FA about the illegal payments previuosly made, with these further allegations the League and the FA were forced into a situation where an example had to be made, The result being that the club was to be expelled from the league, ordered to be disbanded and the players auctioned off.
The players were auctioned off on October 17. 1919. Also on this date a meeting was held by over 1000 supporters to try and save the club, and with the help of a local solicitor called Alf Masser, a new club was formed, now called LEEDS UNITED. Leeds United were then invited to join the Midland League and also moved into Elland Road full time after the demise of Leeds City.
