ARSENAL FOOTBALL CLUB - The Gunners.
Arsenal football club were formed in 1886 but were originally called ‘Dial Square’ they were formed by workers at the ‘Royal Arsenal Armament Factory’ in Woolwich and were renamed Royal Arsenal shortly afterwards. After turning professional in 1891 they renamed themselves again to ‘Woolwich Arsenal’. They then joined the football league in 1893, starting out in the second division. By 1904 ‘Woolwich Arsenal’ won promotion to the first division. It was around 1910 that the club was running into financial difficulties and declared bankrupt, Henry Norris took over the club and moved the club to Highbury in 1913 - by then the club had been relegated back to the second division. When ‘Woolwich Arsenal’ moved to the new stadium they dropped the ‘Woolwich’ from their name the following year. In 1919 Arsenal won the right for promotion back into the first division above local rivals Tottenham Hotspur.this is 'Royal Arsenal' pictured in 1889
